What is cryotherapy?
Cryotherapy uses liquid nitrous oxide to safely and quickly remove skin imperfections. Using pinpoint precision, a pen-like instrument sprays the extremely cold nitrous oxide at only the area requiring treatment, without affecting surrounding healthy tissue. The process typically takes less than 30 seconds and often takes just one treatment.
Cryotherapy is ideal to remove
- Sun or Age Spots, Freckles, and Sun-Damaged Areas
- Target and eliminate unwanted pigmentation caused by sun exposure or ageing.
- Milia: Precisely treat milia with Cryotherapy, those small, white bumps that can form on the skin.
- Warts: Effectively remove warts, providing a solution for these common skin growths.
- Cherry Angioma/Campbell de Morgan/Blood Spots: Address and eliminate these benign growths that appear as small red or purple spots with our Cryotherapy solution in Sussex.
- Skin Tags: Permanently remove skin tags, offering a solution for these harmless but often bothersome skin outgrowths.
Benefits of cryotherapy include
- Aesthetic improvements
- Virtually painless process
- Precision treatment
- No incision, bleeding or risk of infection
- Quick procedure with no down time
How does Cryotherapy work?
A pen-like tool is used in cryotherapy which emits a fine jet of Nitrous Oxide under high pressure. This extremely precise jet destroys the tissue it reaches, by creating ice shards in the intercellular fluid which rupture the membrane of the cell, causing it to shrivel and die. Because of the high accuracy of the tool, there is no damage to surrounding tissue.
What to expect during treatment
As with all treatments at Imogen’s you’ll be welcomed into the treatment room and assessed by our highly-skilled therapist. We’ll take a detailed history, discuss what you hope to achieve and assess the area to ensure it’s suitable for treatment. If treatment is possible your therapist will conduct the treatment, which will take just a few seconds. If the area needing treated is in a particularly sensitive area, it may be necessary to treat over more than one session so as not to damage the surrounding tissue.
What results can you expect?
Cryotherapy is an extremely effective treatment for the removal of skin imperfections. Immediately after treatment you’ll see that the area treated has turned white, because it’s frozen. The area will turn red once thawed and a weal will form. A crust will form after 24 hours which will take up to two weeks to fall off, revealing your new healed skin. The skin may appear lighter, but in most cases will return to its normal colour over a few weeks.

Common Questions
Does cryotherapy hurt?
Cryotherapy is a virtually painless process requiring no anaesthetic, in fact most patients get an anaesthetic effect from the extremely cold temperature. However, there may be a mild stinging when the treatment reaches the bottom of the treatment area which can continue for a few minutes after. You may experience an itchiness in the area for up to 10 minutes after the procedure.
Does cryotherapy leave a scar?
On rare occasions cryotherapy can cause temporary darkening or lightening of the skin which can last a few months. This is more common in very dark skin. Usually this disappears, but sometimes it may be permanent.
I have dark skin, can I have cryotherapy?
Anyone can have cryotherapy. For people with dark skin it is recommended to have shorter cycles over a period of time to limit the likelihood of skin lightening. However, as people with very dark skin are more likely to experience a lightening of the skin surrounding the treated area, they may decide it is not as beneficial. This occurs due to damage to the melanocytes around the treated area.
Is cryotherapy permanent?
Cryotherapy is a permanent cure for most skin imperfections, however some lesions are harder to remove than others. Deep lesions such as verrucae or warts can take several treatments to get final results and if left too long in between, may begin to recur.
How many cryotherapy treatments will I need?
Most skin imperfections can be treated in one session, however if the imperfection is in a particularly sensitive area, such as an eye lid, it may be necessary to perform several shorter sittings to prevent damage to the surrounding tissue. If the imperfection is particularly large or deep, it may also be necessary to have repeat sessions.
Will I need a patch test?
A patch test is not required for cryotherapy. The area to be treated will be assessed by our highly-skilled therapist during your appointment to determine if it is appropriate to treat the area with cryotherapy.
Can cryotherapy be used on skin cancers?
While forms of cryotherapy may be offered by doctors to treat small benign cancers such as basal cell carcinomas, we do not treat these lesions. We perform a thorough inspection of the treatment site during your consultation and if we have reason to suspect that a skin imperfection is cancerous you will be referred to your GP for further investigations. In these cases we will be unable to perform the cryotherapy.
